Safety Surfacing for Playgrounds

Safety Surfacing for Playgrounds: Because Every Fall Should Be a Safe One

Kids climb. Kids jump. Kids fall. The right playground safety surfacing transforms a hard landing into a softer one, giving children the freedom to play boldly while giving parents, teachers, and park managers the peace of mind they deserve. This collection is selected for  impact protection, long-term durability, and real-world performance in the places kids love most.

Playground Safety Surfacing Options: Rubber Mulch, Fanny Pads & Borders

A complete safety surfacing system is more than just what's underfoot — it's a thoughtfully layered solution.

  • Rubber Playground Mulch — Premium loose-fill rubber mulch delivers superior impact absorption without the splinters, rot, or pest problems of wood alternatives. It stays put, holds its depth, and looks great season after season. Perfect for high-traffic zones under swings, slides, and climbing structures.
  • Fanny Pads — Soft, cushioned pads that protect little ones during sliding and seated play. Designed for heavy use and built to hold up against sun, rain, and the relentless energy of children.
  • Playground Borders — Clean, sturdy rubber borders that keep loose-fill surfacing exactly where it belongs. They define play zones, prevent material migration, and help maintain the certified depth your equipment requires.

How to Choose the Right Safety Surfacing for Your Playground

The best surfacing for your space depends on three things: the fall height of your equipment, the depth of material needed to meet that fall height, and whether your space requires ADA-accessible pathways. Not sure where to start? Our team is here to help — we work with families, schools, and parks every day to spec the right system for every space and budget.

Playground Safety Surfacing for Schools, Parks & Families

Whether you're a parent building a backyard dream or a facilities director managing a district-wide upgrade, we have the right solution for your scale:

  • Parents & families — Premium rubber mulch and borders that install easily, last for years, and make your backyard the one every kid on the block wants to visit.
  • Schools & school districts — Bulk pricing, compliance documentation, and surfaces that stand up to hundreds of kids every single day.
  • Parks & recreation departments — Durable, low-maintenance surfacing that meets public playground standards and reduces long-term upkeep costs.
  • Daycares & therapy centers — Soft, forgiving surfaces that support children of all abilities, including those with sensory and mobility needs.

Installation & Maintenance Tips for Playground Safety Surfaces

Great surfacing only works when it's properly installed and maintained. Keep these best practices in mind:

  • Install rubber mulch at the minimum certified depth for your equipment's fall height.
  • Use rubber borders to contain loose-fill and prevent depth loss at the edges of your play zone.
  • Inspect and rake surfacing monthly to redistribute material after heavy use, especially under high-traffic equipment.
  • Top off rubber mulch as needed — it compacts far less than wood mulch, so maintenance is minimal compared to traditional alternatives.
