Types of Sensory Swings: How to Choose for Home or School

A cozy spot to curl up with a book? A roomy swing for a kiddo who likes an open seat? Something with a little more support? Those are very different shopping lists, even though you will find them all when you search for sensory swings.

Start with what your kiddo enjoys and where you have room to hang it. Keep the cost of the whole setup in mind, too. We will walk through the options, what comes in the box and the questions to ask before you buy.

Types of Sensory Swings: Which One Fits Your Kiddo?

Start with the seat. Some kiddos love a tucked-away spot with fabric around them. Others want more room and a clear view of what everyone else is doing. Here is a quick way to compare the main styles.

Type What you get What to check
Pod swing A cushioned seat with fabric sides and an open front. Seat size, user weight and hanging hardware.
Hammock or cocoon swing Fabric that cradles or wraps around the body. The shape varies by model. Whether it attaches to a ceiling, frame or specific climber.
Open nest swing A wide basket-style seat with an open view of the room. Seat diameter and room for the swing to move.
Platform swing A flat, open surface suspended from above. The required suspension points and space around it.
Full-support seat A shaped seat with a high back and harness. The rider's measurements and the frame needed.

You will also find hanging seats, like the Joki, in this group. Think of those as a little reading nook or a place to sit for a quiet break.

Pod Sensory Swings and Hanging Seats for a Cozy Little Spot

If your kiddo likes having a spot of their own, a cushioned pod or hanging seat is a good place to start. The fabric comes up around the sides, with an opening in the front.

The Wood and Hearts Pod Swing has a cotton/polyester fabric seat and a removable filled cushion. It holds one user up to 132 lb. The cushion and carabiners come with it. You will need to plan for a stand, a compatible climbing frame or ceiling mounting hardware for your space.

The LA SIESTA Joki Teddy Hanging Nest gives your kiddo a cozy little spot to curl up with a book or take a break from a busy day. It has an organic cotton seat and a removable filled cushion. It is designed for kids ages 3–10, up to 175 lb, and the ceiling suspension kit is included.

Wondering what else you need to order? The Wood and Hearts comes with carabiners; the Joki comes with its ceiling suspension kit. With either choice, have an installer check where you plan to hang it before you get started.

Hammock and Cocoon Sensory Swings for Kiddos Who Like to Curl Up

Does your kiddo like fabric tucked around them, or do they want plenty of room to peek out? That can help you narrow down hammock and cocoon styles. The names cover quite a few shapes, so look at the opening and the space inside each one.

Already have an Avenlur climber? The Avenlur Sensory Swing Hammock may let you add a hanging seat to the setup you own. It includes an inflatable cushion and attaches to compatible Avenlur climbers. Check your exact climber model before ordering.

The climber is sold separately. If you are starting from scratch, add up the cost of both pieces and measure the whole setup first. That gives you a much better picture of what you are bringing home.

Open Nest and Platform Sensory Swings for More Room

Some kiddos want an open seat where they can see the room around them. A nest swing has a wide, basket-style seat. A platform swing has a flat surface suspended from above.

The TFH Nest Swing 8BRNS has a 47-inch-diameter seat. Before you fall in love with the picture, measure that circle on your floor. Then allow the extra space listed in the instructions for the swing to move. This one needs more room than a small hanging seat.

If you are choosing a platform swing for a school or therapy room, bring the therapist into the decision early. They can help choose the style and hanging setup for the activities they have planned.

Full-Support Sensory Swing Seats for Kiddos Who Need Extra Support

If your kiddo needs help staying comfortably positioned, take a closer look at a full-support seat. The back, harness and seat size matter here.

The TFH Full Support Swing Seats have a high back, a raised center section between the legs, an adjustable harness and included ropes. They come in child, teen and adult sizes. You will need to purchase the frame separately.

Use your kiddo's hip width and seated height to compare the size chart, along with the weight limit. Age alone will not tell you which size fits. If your kiddo needs positioning support, ask their therapist to help with the fit.

Choosing a Sensory Swing That Fits Your Home or School

Finding the seat is only part of the purchase. You also need somewhere suitable to hang it. Work this out before ordering so you know what the complete setup will cost.

Hanging it from the ceiling? Have a qualified installer check the structure and choose the right fasteners. Even when a mounting kit is included, the installer needs to confirm it suits your ceiling.

Looking at a freestanding frame? Measure the floor space and height it needs while in use. A foldaway frame can be put away afterward, but you still need enough room to use it.

Adding it to a climber? Check that the attachment is made for your exact model and use its approved hanging point.

Make sure the seat, hardware and frame or mount are compatible. Follow the instructions for clearance and weight limits, and have an adult supervise use.

Choosing Sensory Swings for a Busy School Day

Shopping for a school, clinic or another commercial space? Before you order, check that the swing you like is approved by the manufacturer for commercial use. Some models are for home use only. If you are unsure, ask us and we can help you check.

For a school, I would put the budget toward a good-quality main seat and the setup needed to use it safely. Optional accessories can come later. Start with something that fits the students, the room and the staff who will be caring for it.

Then ask the everyday questions: What comes with it? What else do we need? How do we clean it between students?

For a fabric seat, find out whether the cover comes off, how it can be washed and how long it needs to dry. For a molded seat, check which cleaning products can be used. A seat needs to fit your cleaning routine as well as your space.

Include mounting, installation and any required floor protection in the budget. Our sensory room budget guide for schools and clinics can help you plan for those costs before you place the order.

Questions About Choosing Types of Sensory Swings

Where should I start if I am not sure which one to buy?

Tell us a little about your kiddo and your space. Do they like a cozy seat or an open one? Do they need extra support? Do you already have a frame or climber? Those answers help us narrow things down without sending you through a long list of products.

Will everything I need come in the box?

It depends on the product. The Joki includes a ceiling suspension kit. Other seats need separate mounting hardware, a frame or a compatible climber. Check the included-parts list for the one you choose, and ask us if anything is unclear before you order.

Can I put the seat in the washing machine?

Check the care instructions for that exact model first. A removable cover may have different washing instructions from the cushion inside it. Keep the harness and hanging hardware out of the wash unless the instructions specifically allow it. Check the fabric and hanging parts before use, and replace damaged parts before using the seat again.
